Wimbledon Introduces Video Review Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the ability to contest certain calls from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players cannot to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another change at Wimbledon this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a ball was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
